Lexapro is another antidepressant that can be used to treat generalized social anxiety. It is also used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Lexapro is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and its mission is to influence serotonin levels in your brain.

Serotonin is a chemical that strongly influences your mood and anxiety. Its function is to send messages from one nerve cell to another and if the serotonin levels become unbalanced, it can cause a variety of conditions, including anxiety and depression.

Lexapro as a social anxiety medication works by helping to block the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, which helps keeping the serotonin levels balanced.

How to take Lexapro for Social Anxiety

Lexapro comes in both, liquid form and tablets. It is taken by mouth, and is usually consumed once a day. Similarly to other SSRIs, Lexapro can cause drowsiness. If you experience drowsiness, try to take the medication before bedtime. That way you can avoid being drowsy during the most productive part of the day.

Lexapro can also cause insomnia. If you are taking this medication for social anxiety and you have troubles getting enough sleep, you might want to take the drug early in the morning. Just make sure that you always take the medication at the same time. If you make it a habit to take Lexapro at the same time every day, you can avoid missing your daily dosage and also overdosing.

You can take the medicine with or without food. If it bothers your stomach, make sure you eat some food with it.

Similarly to other medications for social anxiety, Lexapro must be taken as prescribed. If you stop taking it without consulting your doctor first, it will not work.

The dosage of the medication depends on several factors, including your age, your other medical conditions, and other medications you are already taking. Therefore it is necessary to always tell your doctor everything about your other medical conditions and drugs you are taking.

  • ejaculation problems, orgasm problems, decreased sex drive
  • increased sweating
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness

Nausea and dizziness can go away as your body adjusts to medication, however other problems are less likely to go away on their own.

Make sure to let your doctor know if you develop any side effects while taking Lexapro. Also make sure to let your doctor know if you experience any suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, aggressiveness, or anything else unusual. Your doctor is there to help you.

Lexapro and Headaches

Lexapro is licensed to treat anxiety disorders and depression; however it is sometimes also used for treating severe headaches and migraines.

A migraine is an intense headache that can be felt on one or both sides of the head. The pain usually appears around the temples or behind one eye or ear. Migraine headaches can last for hours and sometimes even days. There are several medications approved for migraine treatment, and Lexapro is not specifically approved to prevent migraines.

Lexapro can also cause headaches. Therefore if you experience severe headaches while taking Lexapro, talk to your doctor about that.

If your doctor believes that the Lexapro and headaches are related, he or she may recommend you some other medication for social anxiety.

They are also waking up in the middle of the night very often and then have trouble falling back asleep. If you are experiencing insomnia while taking Lexapro, you need to talk with your doctor.

In order to get a better sleep you should develop a regular sleeping regimen. You should try to go to bed and out of the bed at the same times every day. You should also avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine. Also make it a habit to leave your worries out of the bed. If you are having troubles getting rid of your worrying thoughts, get out of the bed and leave your bedroom for a while. As soon as you feel sleepy again, go back to bed and try to fall asleep.

If that doesn’t help you at all you should talk with your doctor about Lexapro and insomnia.

Lexapro and Alcohol

Mixinf drugs and alcohol is always dangerous and drinking alcohol while taking Lexapro is not recommended. If alcohol is taken together with Lexapro, it can enhance the effects of the medication. This also means that the dangers of experiencing all the negative side effects become significantly increased.

Quitting Lexapro

Never try to quit taking Lexapro without consulting your doctor first. Quitting Lexapro suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, tiredness, and confusion. If you want to stop taking it, you have to talk with your doctor about that and he or she will help you wean off gradually. That way you will minimize the chances of experiencing the withdrawal symptoms.
